Why Oil & Gas needs to embrace mobile & cloud

Neil Norman - Founder HRSCompanies operating in the upstream E&P space often share similar organisational traits: Health & Safety and HR policies being set at the Head Office, located remote of the major places of O&G production. This gives rise to a distributed control environment for the purposes of identity and skills vetting, whilst also placing a heavy reliance on each production facility to interpret and apply the policies of Corporate. This is where Cloud and mobile technologies provide the tools to deliver a consistent application of policy across the Organisation.

In the case of Cloud computing, with each production facility often employing individuals from both the local and international communities, the importance of applying a standard identity and skills vetting approach cannot be underestimated, often taking into account the peculiarities of operating in the country in question. Off-the-shelf Cloud-based systems, such as MTrust, provide O&G operators or service providers with the ability to set identity and skills standards for any prospective roles centrally, whilst allowing applications for employment to be managed locally, at all times adhering to Corporate policy.

Mobile Technologies Maintain Safety Assurance

With an Identity & Skills capability in place, this is where Mobile technologies help maintain identity, skills and safety assurance at site. With a strong foundation of who is who, with what skills, it is then possible to add this valuable information to your site security system and introduce a new standard of health & safety compliance. Mobile devices place computing power and access to information in the hands of the operative, anywhere, anytime. At a basic level, operatives can spot-check individuals to ensure they have the right skills to be operating in that area, but at a more advanced level, they are able to carry out “Persons on Board” or Mustering checks in the event of emergencies. By including skills requirements, POB / Mustering functionality takes on a whole new meaning in that it ensures the right people with the right skills are in the right location at any point in time. Naturally, having standard mustering capability (which is not so standard in a mobile format) in the event of an emergency ensures you can direct the right response and resources and not expose response staff to more unnecessary dangers.

The technology ensures that workforce management remains a simple and cost-effective task. Deployed both onshore and offshore in complex locations, mobile solutions, such as MSite Mobile, can be seamlessly integrated into the operator’s existing access control system, with data on the central server being synchronised to handheld devices.

This is key from a health and safety perspective: mobile devices can be deployed to establish instant mustering points during incidents, with integrated Smart Card or biometric technologies used to automatically verify a worker’s identity and their safe location on a site. This provides essential roll call information to incident response teams even if the main access control server is unavailable and potentially save lives.
